COMPUTING

East London College
offers its’ own programme and also courses from the Association of Computer Professionals and IMIS. This range of courses offers an excellent opportunity for acquiring professional and academic qualifications that are recognised around the world. If you obtain sufficient credit at Advanced Diploma level, you will be eligible for direct entry into a BSc (Hons) Computing degree programme.
Introducing IT and business principles in the first year, the courses progress to more advanced specialist subjects in the second year. This programme enables students to keep abreast of the dynamic IT industry.

 

  BCS Certificate in IT

This is the foundation level of BCS Professional Examinations.

This level is the academic equivalent to Year 1 of a UK university honours degree and is recognised by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) as Level 4.


The Certificate in IT focuses on the following core modules:
  • Information Systems 
  • Software Development
  • Computer & Network Technology


Completion of the Certificate in IT level means you are eligible to apply for BCS Associate Membership (AMBCS).

 

BCS Diploma in IT

This is the Diploma level of BCS Professional Examinations.

This level is the academic equivalent to Year 2 of a UK university honours degree and is recognised by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) as Level 5.

By beginning the Diploma in IT level course BCS assumes knowledge of the Certificate in IT level modules (or exemption) and focuses on the following:
 

  • Professional Issues in Information Systems Practice (Core Module)
  • Computer Networks
  • Database Systems
  • IT Project Management


Completion of the Diploma Examinations level means you are eligible to apply for BCS Membership if you have 3 years' experience as an IT professional.


Professional Project


In order to finish the Diploma in IT level candidates must complete a project. 

Successful completion of the project and examination enables you to apply for selected degree courses with universities and means you are eligible to apply for BCS Membership (MBCS) if you have 2 years' experience as an IT professional.

 

  ABE Certificate in Business Information Systems

The four compulsory papers are:
  • Introduction to Business 
  • Introduction to the World of Computer
  • Introduction to Accounting
  • IT Applications and Skills

ABE Diploma (Part 1) in Business Information Systems 

The three compulsory papers are:

  • Computer Fundamentals
  • Computer Applications in Business & Finance
  • Business Communication

Students must also pass one of the following subjects:

  • Organisational Behaviour (Management Pathway)
  • Accounting (Finance Pathway)

ABE Diploma (Part 2) in Business Information Systems

The four compulsory papers are:

  • Principles of Programming
  • Networks and Distributed Systems
  • Quantitative Methods
  • Systems Analysis

Students must also pass one of the following subjects:

  • Human Resource Management (Management Pathway)
  • Managerial Accounting (Finance Pathway)

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be recommended by two responsible persons. they must also have attained one of the following:

  • ABE Certificate in Business Information System.
  • Two GCE 'A' Levels together with four GCSE’s at Grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics.
  • BTEC National award in relevant subjects.
  • Three LCCI passes at third level in relevant subjects.
  • Four passes in the RSA examinations, two of which must be at Stage III.
  • Pitman Qualifications - two passes at Level 3 in relevant subjects.
  • An 'Access' Certificate from a UK College of Further Education.
  • An NCVQ-approved qualifications at Level 3 in relevant subjects.
  • Some overseas qualifications which follow University of London guidelines, may be accepted by the Registrars being equivalent to the above.
  • At least two years appropriate work experience - reference letter from employers must accompany all such applications.

ABE Advanced Diploma in Business Information Systems

The four compulsory papers are:

  • Contemporary Application Development Methods
  • Managing Systems Change
  • Relational Database Applications in Business
  • Internet Systems Development

Students must also pass one of the following subjects:

  • Strategic Human Resource Management (Management Pathway)
  • Corporate Finance (Finance Pathway)

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have attained one of the following entry qualifications:

  • ABE Diploma in Business Information System.
  • A degree, awards by a recognised UK or Overseas University.
  • Other recognised qualifications of approved Overseas institutions of Higher Education.

Entry Requirements for IMIS Foundation Diploma

  • There are no prerequisites for this course apart from a British Council IELTS test score of 6.0 or above is essential. Similar proficiency tests will be considered.

    intermediate HSC pass with good grades OR
    applicants of 21 years of age or more may be admitted at the discretion of the college, foregoing minimum entry requirements, provided that they satisfy the college that they are sufficiently well motivated.
  • British Council IELTS test score of 6.0 or above is essential. Similar proficiency tests will be considered.

  • ELC Higher Diploma / ACP Diploma or IMIS Diploma OR other suitable qualifications and experience.
  • British Council IELTS test score of 6.0 or above is essential. Similar proficiency tests will be considered.
     
 

BSc (Hons) in Computing 

The BSc (Hons) programme will equip you with necessary knowledge in the latest computing concepts and technologies. Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to venture into the relevant masters programme to increase knowledge in an appropriate, specialised field or be able to apply for a suitable position in a performing IT company. 

As a graduate you can look forward to excellent career prospects within the computing industry or companies that use computers. The practical approach featured throughout will enable you to make an effective and immediate contribution within your work environment. A keen student can aim to become a Software Programmer, Database Designer etc. 

Course Introduction:
This is a specially devised extended final year programme leading to the
University of Greenwich BSc (Hons) Computing degree.

 In addition to the required academic qualifications, students must be aged at least 19 years on entry to the programme.

Course Objectives:
The degree helps you to understand how computer systems are developed. It teaches software engineering, distributed and mobile computing. It also trains you to design computer networks, databases, and much more.

  • Edexcel HND in a Computing or I.T. related subject
  • ABE Advanced Diploma in Business Information Systems
