Certificate in Teaching in the Life Long Learning Sector
East London College offers the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) programme, which is recognised by Lifelong Learning UK, the government approved standards body for the education sector. The qualification is defined as the minimum requirement for those wishing to support learning in post 16 Education.
CTLLS offers a sound introduction to the role and responsibilities of the teacher, tutor or trainer within the Lifelong Learning sector.
For teachers in Further Education colleges it is the mandatory first stage in the process of acquiring associate qualification and licensed practitioner status (ATLS). The 24 credits from this award can be carried forward to the
DTLLS qualification*.
It goes a step further than PTLLS, in that there is a requirement to undertake teaching practice, which is also assessed as part of the course.
*exemptions will be awarded according to Awarding Body guidelines

Subject Aims
At East London College, we allocate at least 120 contact hours for CTLLS, and students can expect to spend in the region of 120 hours on research, self study, and teaching practice.
CTLLS can be achieved at either Level 3 or Level 4.
On completion of CTLLS a learner should:
- adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching
- reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development
- identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
- develop confidence, communication and interpersonal skills
- develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities.
CTLLS Theory
CTLLS is a minimum 24 credit qualification, consisting of three mandatory units (total 18 credits) and optional units to the minimum value of 6 credits (to a maximum value of 18 credits).
The mandatory units are:
The remaining credits must be achieved from a selection provided.
Exemptions:
Students wishing to join CTLLS who have already achieved PTLLS can be offered exemption for
PTLLS (Unit 1), subject to our centre approval.
CTLLS can lead on to DTLLS, but in its own right, can also lead to
Associate Teacher status (ATLS), which is conferred by the Institute for Learning (IfL). If learners wish to progress to DTLLS, exemption would be granted for Units 1 and 2, subject to centre approval.
CTLLS Teaching Practice
As a trainee associate teacher on the CTLLS course, you will need to complete 30 teaching practice hours. Teaching practice often starts with some classroom observations, which are not accredited, but which will allow you to understand the setting you are in, and the requirements of the institution.
There will be a number of theories and strategies which you will have studied at college which you will implement during your practice, and you will be required to reflect on your practice every step of the way. You will demonstrate your ability to plan, deliver and assess your students, and you will be asked to consider a range of initiatives whilst you do this.
The theory which you learn in the classroom at college will focus your practice in areas such as planning and enabling learning, and planning for and conducting assessments. As well as studying the complete teaching cycle, and you will very early on in
CTLLS identify what your key roles and responsibilities will be in practice.
During your CTLLS teaching practice, you will be observed for a minimum of 3 hours, over a minimum of 3 occasions. Your mentor or tutor will then provide you with constructive feedback, which will further your development as a teacher.
When you have successfully completed CTLLS, your ATLS will be conferred by the Institute for Learning (IfL), through the process of professional formation – a post qualification process of confirming your skills in a work setting.
Methods of Assessment
In order to achieve your CTLLS award, you will complete a series of theoretical and practical tasks. Our highly supportive and fully trained staff will guide you through the process, through focussed classroom activities and lectures.
At East London College, we allocate at least 120 contact hours for CTLLS, and students can expect to spend in the region of 120 hours on research, self study, and teaching practice.
You will have access to the college’s reference library, which stocks a number of texts from the recommended reading list. In addition, whilst at East London College, you will have access to specific online support tools, and unlimited internet access. At present, there are no examinations for
