Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector - DTLLS
East London College offers the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) programme, which is recognised by Lifelong Learning UK, the government approved standards body for the education sector. The qualification is defined as the minimum requirement for those wishing to teach in post 16 Education.
Since 2007, through the workforce reforms, anyone wishing to teach in the post-compulsory (post-16) sector in the UK, is required to hold licensed practitioner status
QTLS. DTLLS is aimed at those individuals who wish to attain a ‘Full Teaching Role’, and leads to
QTLS.
At East London College, we allocate at least 360 contact hours for DTLLS, and students can expect to spend in the region of 840 hours on research, self study, and teaching practice.
Our trainee teachers studying DTLLS come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many are already teaching in some capacity, or are working as teaching assistants, and are looking to formalise their professional status as a fully qualified teacher, whereas some are new to teaching. Whatever your background, our highly supportive team will discuss your options with you, and support you along your chosen career path!

Subject Aims
The DTLLS qualification is aimed at those individuals who:
- Are deemed to be in a Full Teacher role or
- Would like or require a full Level 5 qualification allowing them to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector or
- Are seeking career progression within their area of work and
- Have access to a minimum 150 teaching practice hours (whether pre-service or in–service*)
- teach on both a one-to-one and group basis for a variety of learners, across a range of levels
*If you are in a post where you are not formally contracted in the role of ‘teacher’ this is deemed to be pre-service rather than ‘in-service’ (Awarding Body definition).
At East London College, we allocate at least 360 contact hours for DTLLS, and students can expect to spend in the region of 840 hours on research, self study, and teaching practice. When you have successfully completed both the theory and the practical elements of
DTLLS, your QTLS will be conferred by the Institute for Learning (IfL), through the process of professional formation – a post qualification process of confirming your skills in a work setting.
DTLLS is suitable for those who work or want to work as teachers in the
Lifelong Learning Sector, such as further, adult and community education, work-based learning and the voluntary sector, provided they are qualified, and or experienced in the subject they intend to teach, at the appropriate level.
On completion of DTLLS a learner should:
- Adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching
- Reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development
- Identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
- Develop confidence, communication and interpersonal skills
- Develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities.
DTLLS Theory
DTLLS is a minimum 120 credit qualification, consisting of seven mandatory units (total 90 credits) and optional units to the minimum total value of 30 credits. For the optional credits, at least 15 credits must be achieved at level 4, and at least 15 credits must be achieved at level 5. DTLLS is delivered in two parts; part one is delivered at level 3 / 4, and part two is delivered at level 5.
The mandatory units for part one are:
The remaining 15 credits must be achieved, at Level 4, from a selection provided.
The mandatory units for part two are:
- Unit 5 – Continuing Personal and Professional Development
- Unit 6 – Curriculum Development for Inclusive Practice
- Unit 7 – Wider Professional Practice (Total 45 credits)
The remaining 15 credits must be achieved, at Level 5, from a selection provided.
Exemptions:
Students wishing to join DTLLS who have already achieved PTLLS can be offered exemption for
PTLLS (Unit 1), subject to centre approval.
Students wishing to join DTLLS who have already achieved CTLLS can be offered exemptions for Units 1 & 2, subject to centre approval.
In order to be successful in DTLLS, you will need to demonstrate a depth of knowledge and understanding of each unit which has been studied. You will be required to conduct your own independent research, and you will be required to show evidence of your reading and research right from the off! During
DTLLS, there will be opportunities in the classroom for workshops, discussions, and group work to support what you have studied, and you will be guided at every step towards your goal.
During DTLLS you will study various theories and legislation, as well as consider a range of teaching and learning strategies, and there will be plenty of opportunity for you to practice and hone your own skills in the classroom also. Your written work will reflect this, as you will show your understanding of how various theories and strategies affect everyday teaching practice.
DTLLS Teaching Practice
As a trainee teacher, you will need to complete 150 teaching practice hours. Teaching practice often starts with some classroom observations, which are not accredited, but which will allow you to understand the setting you are in, and the requirements of the institution. There will be a number of theories and strategies which you will have studied throughout
DTLLS which you will implement during your practice, and you will be required to reflect on your practice every step of the way. You will demonstrate your ability to plan and deliver lessons, and assess your students, and you will be asked to consider a range of initiatives whilst you do this.
The theory which you learn in DTLLS will focus your practice in areas such as Equal Opportunities, Inclusive Learning, as well as planning for assessment, as well as the teaching cycle, and you will very early on in
DTLLS identify what your key roles and responsibilities will be in practice.
During your DTLLS teaching practice, you will be observed for a minimum of eight hours, over a minimum of eight occasions. Your mentor or tutor will then provide you with constructive feedback, which will further your development as a teacher.
Methods of Assessment
In order to achieve your DTLLS award, you will complete a series of theoretical and practical tasks throughout the programme. You will prepare two portfolios of work, one as evidence of your theory assignments and assessments at college, and one as evidence of your teaching practice. Our highly supportive and fully trained staff will guide you through the process, through focussed classroom activities and lectures. You will have access to the college’s reference library, which stocks a number of texts from the recommended reading list. In addition, whilst at East London College, you will have access to specific online support tools, and unlimited internet access. At present, there are no examinations for
DTLLS.
When you have successfully completed DTLLS, your QTLS will be conferred by the
Institute for Learning (IfL), through the process of professional formation – a post qualification process of confirming your skills in a work setting.

"I have found this course challenging and at times I have been stretched to my limits. I have enjoyed every day I have been here. I leave with a head full of information that takes me a week to make sense of in my brain. I have come alive and I feel so grateful to the fantastic and patient staff at the college. I am so grateful to my tutor Iffat, who is the best! At times she was very hard on me but always fair. To be told I have passed my assignments that is all down to her teaching skills. At my age information does not always stay in my head but it’s never too late to start!"
B WILLIAMS
"The staff are friendly and approachable which is something I found really helpful before I started on the course. It made a difference to a previous college I had approached for information about the same course. Teaching is broad and extensive aimed at encouraging learning."
BUNMI JOHN
"My first time of joining this college I had a lot of fear of the unknown, whether I would be able to last to even the middle of the course! The staff have being very helpful with step-to-step guidance, handbook, lectures, on the phone/e-mail, feedback. They have helped me to supersede my expectations. The team as a whole are welcoming, motivating, assistive, supportive, listening and transparent. My best mentor and friend as well as helper is Iffat. Thanks for giving me the opportunity. The best aspect of being at ELC is seeing the staff in the morning, seeing my colleagues, learning new things, achieving my targets/goals."
FOLASADE FAKOTE
"My experience at ELC has been fantastic. I really enjoyed being on this DTLLS course. The college has been very helpful and so has the lecturer. The teaching style was prolific and engaging. "Before I made the decision to attend ELC I had a conversation with a course advisor and felt like I was talking to an old friend! When I arrived I found this was not unusual because they are all helpful warm and friendly. Learning becomes a pleasure because they made it easy for me to engage. The staff are amazing and nothing is too much trouble."
SONIA
"I came to ELC after having achieved my PTLLS at another college. I came into the college feeling apprehensive about my ability to study after a very long time of away from further education. Being at ELC and taking part on DTLLS course has caused me to realise that I should have pursued a career as a teacher years ago. Iffat you are a great teacher - motivating and thought provoking and you keep it real – as the young people say! Thank you.
The best aspect of my time at ELC was getting to know other students and share knowledge and ideas as well as being able to grow at a pace suitable to the way I learn."
