Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector
East London College offers the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) programme, which is recognised by Lifelong Learning UK, the government approved standards body for the education sector. The qualification is defined as the minimum requirement for those wishing to deliver post 16 Education.
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector PTLLS offers a sound introduction to the role and responsibilities of the teacher, tutor or trainer within the Lifelong Learning sector.
For teachers in Further Education colleges it is the mandatory first stage in the process of acquiring full qualification and licensed practitioner status. The 12 credits from this award can be carried forward to either the
CTLLS or the
DTLLS qualification.
For those working in other environments such as Work Based Learning or the Voluntary Sector, it provides an excellent foundation for trainers or workplace assessors who also provide a small amount of input.

Testimonials

"Friendly, informative, helpful, supportive, I cannot praise the work of ELC highly enough. I was a disillusioned lady caused by broken promises and a most horrible previous experience. All staff have an insurmountable amount of knowledge. I can say their knowledge base is the most superior I have experienced to date.
The best aspect of my time at ELC was that I was given support and a solid foundation in my quest to become a good lecturer."
Teaching Student
"The staff are friendly and approachable which is something I found really helpful before I started on the course. It made a difference to a previous college I had approached for information about the same course. Teaching is broad and extensive aimed at encouraging learning."
BUNMI JOHN
"I enrolled on the PTLLS course at East London College in January 2012, as I wanted to gain a further insight into teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, in addition to broadening my skill set and knowledge in this field.
The course was structured extremely well, making all practical and theory assignments both achievable and attainable. Dedication and commitment were certainly required, however the support and encouragement provided by our exceptional tutor and words of wisdom from the staff at the college, made me feel truly supported and valued.
As the class numbers were kept relatively small, it was very easy to bond quickly with the other members of the group and the camaraderie shared with fellow students made it an extremely enjoyable and rewarding experience. We were encouraged throughout the course not just to do well, but to excel in achieving our full potential and obtain results to the best of our abilities.
If you are prepared to work hard, adopt a professional attitude, embrace every aspect of the theory and practical skills that are taught and strive to deliver an outstanding level of education, then this is the college for you.
I would certainly not hesitate to recommend the PTLLS course to anyone who is considering entering the lifelong learning sector, or who wishes to gain a further insight into teaching methodologies, learning styles, assessment principles and current legislation."

Subject Aims
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) can be achieved at either Level 3 or Level 4. Students can expect to dedicate around 30 hours of private study in addition to classroom lectures, but will have unlimited access to our staff and resources during the course.
On completion of this unit a learner should know about:
- Own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
- Appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
- Demonstrating session planning skills
- How to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
- The use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping
To achieve PTLLS, candidates must successfully complete both the theory and practice assignments. You will be required to organise your work in a systematic way and produce a programme folder containing all the required tasks.
PTLLS course objectives are to enable students to:
- Adopt an integrative approach to the theory and practice of teaching and training
- Reflect on own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and potential for development.
- Build up knowledge of principles of learning, teaching and assessment and evaluation.
- Develop own communication and interpersonal skills.
- Develop an awareness of own professional role, the essential value systems which underpin it and the legal requirements for carrying out this role.
Methods of Assessment
In order to achieve your PTLLS award, you will complete a series of theoretical and practical tasks. Our highly supportive and fully trained staff will guide you through the process, through focussed classroom activities and lectures. You will have access to the college’s reference library, which stocks a number of texts from the recommended reading list. In addition, whilst at East London College, you will have access to specific online support tools, and unlimited internet access. At present, there are no examinations for PTLLS.
