Certificate for Security Guards - Level 2

If you are looking for employment in the security industry it is essential that you have the appropriate qualifications to apply for the SIA licence in order to practice. This course is designed for both men and women who wish to work as a security guard either in a retailed outlet, pub, bar, nightclub, hotel, restaurant, off licence and supermarkets, where the work involves the provision of services to the public, to avoid and manage conflict within their work environment.

There are two units for this qualification:

1. The Roles and Responsibilities of Security Guards
2. Conflict Management for Security Guards.


Syllabus Outline

Unit 1
The aim is to develop the learner’s knowledge so that they can assess their work environment and reduce the risk to people, property and premises, by providing effective security and deal with incidents in accordance with agreed procedures.


There are twelve outcomes to this unit. The learner can:

  1. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the Security Guard
  2. Identify the requirements for effective patrolling
  3. Identify the requirements for controlling access
  4. Identify the requirements for search procedures
  5. Identify security and emergency systems and procedures
  6. Recognise requirements for dealing with fire
  7. Identify requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act
  8. Identify the role and powers of the Security Guard in law
  9. Identify requirements for dealing with emergencies
  10. Identify requirements for customer care
  11. Identify requirements for effective communication
  12. Recognise equality and diversity in the workplace.



Unit 2
The aim is to provide the basic understanding to deal effectively with Workplace violence.

There are three outcomes to this unit. The learner can: 

  1. Assess and reduce the risk of violence in the work environment
  2. Identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards violence and take appropriate measures to avoid or calm and defuse the situation
  3. Identify post incident support and report the circumstances to provide information for personal and organisation learning.


Connections with other awards:

The Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards is designed as part of a progression award to prepare those learners working towards achieving the following NVQs and the underpinning knowledge contained within the specific units.
 

  National Certificate for Door Supervisors – Level 2

Under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, all door supervisors must hold a licence to practice. In order to qualify for a licence to practice, an applicant must hold this qualification which consists of two units:

Unit 1: Roles and Responsibilities of Door Supervisors
Unit 2: Conflict Management for Door Supervisors

This qualification is fully endorsed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) in support of the licence to practice for door supervision under the Private Security Act 2001. The qualification is based on the SIA’s standards and on best practice in training and assessment.


Syllabus Outline

Unit 1 - Roles and Responsibilities of Door Supervisors
Aim –
To ensure that door supervisors have the knowledge and understanding of their role and responsibilities within the security industry environment

Unit 2 – Conflict Management for Door supervisors

To ensure that door supervisors have the appropriate communication skills and have applied understanding of conflict management

Entry Requirements:
Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Assessment:
Assessment will be by means of a synoptic multiple-choice knowledge test covering the underpinning knowledge.
 

 

Verification of Candidate Identity
 

Please find listed below acceptable proof of identity documents as specified by the Security Industry Authority (SIA):

Group A

  • Signed valid Passport (any nationality)
  • Signed UK Photo card driving licence
  • Signed UK paper driving licence
  • Original Birth Certificate issued within 12 months of date of birth
  • Valid EU photo identity card
  • Valid UK firearms licence
     

Group B

  • Non Original Birth Certificate issued later than 12 months after your date of birth
  • Marriage Certificate
  • P45 or P60 **
  • Bank or Building Society statement issued to current address *
  • Mortgage statement (issued within last 12 months) or insurance policy at current address (Less than 3 months old)
  • Financial statement e,g. Pension **
  • Utility bill from current address e,g, Gas/electricltelephone - inc mobile phone contract (less than 3 months old)
  • Multiple bills acceptable if from different service providers
  • Certificate of British Nationality
  • British work permit or Visa (issued within last 12 months)
  • Addressed payslip *
  • Credit card statement from current address (Less than 3 months old)
  • Any other document to prove current address e.g. an addressed payslip (less than 3 months old), vehicle registration document, NHS card/exam certificate
  • Child Benefit book **
  • Court summons **
  • Letter from Inland Revenue /OWP/Employment service or local authority

*documentation should be less than 3 months old ** issued within the last 12 months


Candidates may present documentary evidence as follows:

  • 3 documents from Group A
    or
  • 1 document from Group A and 2 documents from Group B
    or
  • 5 documents from Group B
Candidates must present two colour photographs, one for each unit examination (including retakes). Acceptable photographs will be the type required for passports or driving licences and must meet the following criteria:
  • The photograph must be passport size (approx. 35mm x 45mm).
  • The photograph must be full face and head and shoulders (i.e. not a side view) .
  • The candidate must not be wearing sunglasses.
  • The candidate must not be wearing a hat or head covering except where this is required for religious beliefs or ethnic background.

Note: Black and White photographs are not acceptable. Failure to present colour photographs will delay candidate results.
